CIVIC LANE Vets in Chile are using specially designed copper- and zinc-infused vests to help injured Humboldt penguins recover from wounds. The garments can protect injuries while exploiting antimicrobial properties associated with the materials. The experiment is particularly striking because Chile is itself the world's largest copper producer. It also demonstrates how technologies originally developed for humans or domestic animals can sometimes be adapted for wildlife conservation. The story provides an excellent starting point for asking where respondents believe conservation technology can make the greatest difference.
