Battery-electric cars accounted for 25.7 percent of new registrations across 16 major European markets in July, according to newly released industry data. Registrations rose by 13.6 percent year on year, but adoption varied sharply, from very high shares in Nordic markets to much lower levels in parts of southern and eastern Europe. The transition affects drivers, manufacturers, charging networks, power systems and public finances. Governments disagree over how much they should use subsidies, regulation and infrastructure spending to accelerate it. The uneven numbers make the next policy priority more important than a simple pro-or-anti electric-car question.
