CIVIC LANE Türkiye has designated major new marine national parks, including protected areas around Fethiye–Kaş and in the northern Aegean. Marine protection can preserve biodiversity and strengthen ecosystems that support tourism and fisheries over the long term. Restrictions can nevertheless impose immediate costs on fishermen, tour operators and coastal businesses. The real challenge is not simply whether nature deserves protection but how conservation rules should distribute those costs. Different communities are therefore likely to place very different measures at the top of the list.
