Poland is changing school rules governing homework and examinations. Written homework will have to be checked and accompanied by feedback, while schools may allow it to affect annual grades under their own statutes. Policymakers are trying to balance academic discipline against concerns about excessive workload and ineffective repetitive assignments. Parents, teachers and pupils often have sharply different experiences of homework. The disagreement is therefore over whether meaningful homework improves learning enough to justify the additional burden.
