CIVIC LANE The research file highlights provisional EuroMOMO data indicating an unusually large number of excess deaths during Europe's extreme summer heat. EuroMOMO monitors weekly mortality across participating European countries and warns that recent figures can change because of reporting delays and statistical adjustments. Separate national data have also shown substantial excess mortality during severe 2026 heat episodes, including more than 1,200 excess deaths during part of France's July heatwaves. European cities are consequently facing increasing pressure to adapt buildings, streets, workplaces and healthcare systems to prolonged periods of extreme heat. Rather than asking whether climate change exists, the more engaging public-policy question is which adaptation measures citizens would prioritise when resources are limited.
