Rank these medical innovations for the next decade (from MOST to LEAST important):

CIVIC LANE Medicine is entering a period in which gene therapies, personalised treatments, AI-designed drugs and regenerative medicine could transform diseases that were once extremely difficult to treat. However, developing these technologies requires enormous investment, and healthcare systems cannot fund every innovation equally. Some people would prioritise cures for deadly diseases, while others might focus on preventing age-related illness or making existing medicines cheaper and more accessible. The question is not simply what science can achieve, but which breakthroughs society should prioritise first.

How much should HR companies rely on AI when hiring new employees?

CIVIC LANE Companies are increasingly using artificial intelligence to screen CVs, analyse interviews and identify candidates who may perform well in a particular role. Supporters argue that AI can process thousands of applications quickly and potentially reduce some forms of human bias. Critics worry that algorithms can reproduce hidden discrimination and reject strong candidates for reasons they cannot challenge. The future of recruitment may therefore depend on how much decision-making employers are willing to delegate to technology.

If the government needed more tax revenue, who should pay MORE first?

CIVIC LANE Governments need tax revenue to fund healthcare, education, infrastructure and public services, but there is constant disagreement about who should contribute the most. Some favour higher taxes on wealthy individuals and large corporations, while others argue that heavy taxation discourages investment and entrepreneurship. The issue becomes especially controversial when living costs rise and governments need additional revenue. This poll explores where people believe the fairest tax burden should fall.

Would you trust AI to make a decision that could seriously affect your life?

CIVIC LANE A new Swiss survey reports that around 80% of the population now uses artificial intelligence, roughly double the level recorded two years ago. Adoption is particularly high among people aged 15 to 34 and AI is increasingly present at both work and home. Rapid adoption does not necessarily mean equivalent levels of trust. People may happily use AI to translate text or plan a trip while rejecting it for medical, financial or employment decisions. The important dividing line may therefore be not whether people use AI but whether they are ready to let it make consequential decisions.

Rank the following protest rules (from most to least important):

CIVIC LANE Dutch authorities have restated that peaceful demonstrations are protected while dangerous motorway and railway blockades can face enforcement. The guidance follows disruptive protest activity including farmer demonstrations. Protest loses much of its power if it never inconveniences anyone, yet serious disruption can endanger people who are not involved in the dispute. Democratic societies therefore have to distinguish legitimate disruption from unacceptable risk rather than choosing between unlimited protest and no protest. Ranking possible rules exposes where respondents would actually draw that boundary.

Rank the priorities for maritime national parks.

CIVIC LANE Türkiye has designated major new marine national parks, including protected areas around Fethiye–Kaş and in the northern Aegean. Marine protection can preserve biodiversity and strengthen ecosystems that support tourism and fisheries over the long term. Restrictions can nevertheless impose immediate costs on fishermen, tour operators and coastal businesses. The real challenge is not simply whether nature deserves protection but how conservation rules should distribute those costs. Different communities are therefore likely to place very different measures at the top of the list.

Protect biodiversity

Restrict damaging fishing practices

Control mass tourism

Preserve access for local communities

Support sustainable small-scale fishing

Develop eco-tourism

Which safeguard policy would do MOST to reduce corruption in high-risk public positions?

CIVIC LANE Bulgaria's parliament returned early from its summer recess with civil-service reforms and integrity measures for positions considered particularly exposed to corruption risk among the issues receiving attention. Such tests are intended to identify vulnerabilities before they become corruption cases. Critics can question whether tests themselves are reliable, politically neutral or capable of replacing stronger institutional oversight. Anti-corruption systems normally work best when several safeguards operate simultaneously rather than depending on a single screening mechanism. That makes the most useful question which safeguard citizens would trust most.

Rank the best policies to prevent a future teacher shortage.

CIVIC LANE Nearly 200,000 Polish teachers are expected to reach retirement age by the 2035/36 school year. The figure does not mean all of them will immediately leave the profession, but it highlights a major generational workforce challenge. Recruiting replacements may require higher pay, different training routes or changes to working conditions. Keeping older teachers longer could preserve experience but cannot solve the demographic problem indefinitely. The most important question is which intervention Poland should implement first.

https://www.unesco.org/en/query-list/t/teacher-shortage

Increase teacher salaries

Reduce administrative workload

Offer scholarships for trainee teachers

Make entry into teaching more flexible

Improve career progression

Give incentives for experienced teachers to stay longer
